St. Brigid the patron saint of this Church and the greatest of women saints in Ireland, of which she is patroness, is here shown attired in the ancient form of dress worn by a num. She has the staff of an Abbess, holds a church in one hand and an oak leaf in the other, to symbolize her founding of a church and convent at Kildate, where under a large oak tree she erect her famous convent of "Cil-Dara," that is "the church of the oak" (now Kildare) in the present county of that name in Ireland. Beside her is a calf to signify her great interest in farming and her love of animals. Birds are seen flying around her to indicate the joy of the love of God which was in her heart.
