Throughout the year, The Committee To Save St. Brigid Church organizes a number of activities to serve the need of the parishioners and the community. St. Brigid parish was, and still is, a viable parish. Everybody is welcome to participate.

"Homeless Helping the Homeless" ............ December 19 & 20, 1998
Parishioners and neighbors joined the Committee in its "Homeless Helping the Homeless" program. We collected nonperishable food and clothing and distributed these to the needy during and after the Christmas season.This program was an enormous success the last time we did it. We collected over a ton (literally) of clothing and food which we distributed at shelters throughout the city in the name of the parish. They were greatly appreciated by the recipients. [ PHOTOs ]

Christmas Potluck ................... December 16, 1998
Our annual Christmas Potluck was at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. It was a nice evening to see the old friends again. Plently of food and wine.

Rosary at St. Brigid Church ................... October 28, 1998

October is the month for the devotion to Our Lady. Parishioners and friends gathered at the front steps of St. Brigid Church to pray for the parishioners who pass on, the sick, the elderly, and the cause to re-open St. Brigid Church.

ST. BRIGID HISTORY NIGHT ................... October 23, 1998

We were honoured to have Anne Bloomfield, a renowned Architectural Historian as the guest speaker of the evening at Fort Mason's Officers Club. Her presentation and the slide show illustrated the beauty and the history of our Church.

We also enjoyed a fun game of "history bingo" for which the numbers we called were among the year 1863 to present: they represent the numbers of years throughout the history of St. Brigid Church, 135 years and more to come...

Picnic Mass ................... October 3, 1998
Fr. O'Sullivan celebrated our last picnic Mass of the year at Lafayette Park. Donna Casey, San Francisco Board of Supervisor Candidate, also a St. Brigid alumni, joined us at the Park.

Picnic Mass ................... August 22, 1998
Our second Picnic Mass of the year celebrated the "Queenship of Mary." Msgr. John J. O'Connor emphasised the Communion antiphon, "Blessed are you for your firm believing, that the promises of the Lord would be fulfilled."

Picnic Mass ................... July 25, 1998
We gathered at Lafayette Park for our first picnic Mass of the year.
Fr. Cyril O'Sullivan was our celebrant. As always he gave a spiritual homily. It was good to see all the old friends again. The weather was beautiful and plenty of food and drinks. Some brought in badminton to play at the park.
A special thanks to: Helen & Tillie Piscevich for organizing the altar; and of course, to our harpist, Jan Robinson; and Fr. O' playing the tin whistle.

4^th Anniversary Vigil ................... June 30, 1998
For 135 years St. Brigid has served San Francisco, but for the last four of those our Masses have been in parks and parking lots. We have relied on the kindness of friends for places to get together and do the work of the parish. On Tuesday, June 30, we commemmorated the 4th anniversary of the church closing with a series of events throughout the evenings.

   6:00 pm  - Rosary
   6:30 pm  - Mass (schoolyard)
   7:30 pm  - Potluck (Holy Trinity Cathedral)
   9:30 pm  - Church Lighting
  10:00 pm  - Hour of reflection

Church Cleanup .......... June 27, 1998
A special cleanup party gathered at St. Brigid Church to wash off the dust and stains on the church door and steps. Special thanks to the Golden Gate Park Stables for loaning us the washing equipment, and the Sisters in the St. Brigid Rectory for the water supply.

Special Mass .......... June 22, 1998
A special Get-Well Mass was said for Fr. Francis E. King, S.J. at St. Finn Barr Church. A group of St. Brigid's parishioners attended. We ask everyone to say prayers for Fr. King's recovery from his cancer. Thanks. [ LETTER ]

Holy Trinity Cathedral Fund Raising Dinner .......... June 14, 1998

"Gold Cup 98" Soccer Tournament .......... June 6 & 7, 1998
The Mariners, our soccer team, reached the Final after the two-day event in Sacramento. Although we lost the Cup to the "Las Vegas Bulldogs", we are so proud of our team; especially because due to El Nino, there was almost no practice throughout the year. Well done, Mariners! [ PHOTO-1 | PHOTO-2 ]

Spring Dinner .......... May 16, 1998

As always, the dinner function at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club provided a chance for the parishioners to enjoy an evening with old friends, good food and lots of entertainments.
Fr. Francis King, S.J. gave a wonderful invocation for a start. The highlight of the evening was the uplifting speech by Fr. Cyril O'Sullivan. (p.s. For those who were present at the dinner and wondered about the answer to the "Raffle". It was "203")

St. Patrick's Day Parade .......... March 15, 1998

The 134th St. Patrick's Day celebration for our parish since 1863. This year's parade theme surrounds children. The parade is a great opportunity to let the public know about the plight of the church and is great fun for the participants.
*** AWARD: Our unit won the 3rd Best Decorated Car in the parade this year.

St. Brigid Feast Day Vigil & Potluck .......... January 31, 1998
February 1st was the feast day of our church's patron saint, Saint Brigid. The vigil was at the Holy Trinity Cathedral (1520 Green Street), followed by a potluck dinner.

St. Brigid School Distinguished Graduate .......... January 27, 1998
St. Brigid School announced that the National Catholic educational Association (NCEA) has named Beatriz St. John* a 1998 NCEA Catholic Elementary School Distinguished Graduate.
(* Beatriz is the secretary of the Committee to Save St. Brigid Church.)
